Kendra Martin has worked in the Adult Reference Department at Greenwood Public Library for the past two years. She is currently a full time Adult Reference Librarian.
Kendra has a Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University in Landscape Horticulture & Design. She worked at a landscape contracting firm in Newburgh, Indiana for five years after graduating from Purdue. While at Suburban Landscape, Kendra designed landscapes for residential and commercial clients. She sold her designs, selected the plants, and oversaw the installation and maintenance teams that implemented her designs.
While living in Evansville, Kendra volunteered with local schools on various horticultural projects. The Boonville High School horticulture class invited Kendra to speak about landscape design. She then assisted the students as they worked in teams to design an area in front of the school that was in need of updated landscaping. The final design was a mixture of the student’s work and Kendra’s input. She then assisted the kids as they removed the old landscaping and installed the new dirt, plants, and mulch. Kendra also worked with an Eagle Scout in 2005 on a project to re-plant an entrance bed to a local Newburgh grade school. She worked through revisions of his plan to come up with an attractive, sustainable perennial bed that enhanced the sign area without needing constant maintenance or water.
Kendra currently uses her horticultural background and skills in her garden at her home here in Greenwood. She has also presented several programs here at GPL over the past year on a variety of topics including Container Gardening, Herbs, and Square Foot Gardening. Each class has been very well attended by a wide demographic of local gardeners. She looks forward to sharing her knowledge with an even wider group of community members who would like to get together and share their love of dirt, and learn in a hands-on way here at Greenwood Public Library.
