Greenwood Public Library Literacy Kits

The Greenwood Public Library Literacy Kits were generously provided through the Johnson County CAPE Grant. These literacy kits have been made to encourage children and their caregivers to read together and gain an appreciation of books together. Generally, these kits come equipped with two or three books and some toys or other materials that are meant to encourage reading the books and develop comprehension of the materials.

Each of the books in the kit can help your child develop the six critical early literacy skills promoted in the program American Library Association's Every Child Ready to Read. Early literacy is everything your child knows about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. Children begin to develop literacy at birth. Chewing on a book, playing with shape sorters, reading a book over and over, scribbling, playing dress-up, singing silly songs are all part of early literacy.

This is a list of kits available in the Greenwood Public Library Children's Department. These kits can be checked out for three weeks by any patron of GPL. When you check out these kits, you can simply take them to Circulation with your books and DVDs. However, the kits should be returned to the GPL Children's Department for Check-in and not be placed in a drop box. (I doubt they would fit!)

Kits are usually divided by subject and the audience they would best address. The labels we give these audiences are "Early Talkers" (birth to two-year olds), "Talkers" (two- and three-year-olds), and "Pre-Readers" (four- and five-year-olds). We also have some kits that we feel would be appropriate for any age. These kits are labelled "General Audience." Many of these kits will be suitable for multiple age ranges. Pre-Readers may still enjoy books for "Early Talkers." But please be careful in looking for small parts in those kits designed for older children if you plan on allowing your Early Talker to play with them.
