The Greenwood Public Library provides access to several online databases.  With your GPL card, you can even access some from home.  Please refer to the key below to determine how to access a database.

ALLDATA    
Covers automotive repair information (electrical diagrams, diagnostic and repair procedures, maintenance schedules, recalls, parts and labor estimating) for all major models back to 1982.  ALLDATA is not just for auto repair technicians...it's for every level of automotive knowledge!

   Why would I use this database?
    -My mechanic says it will cost $500 to replace a gasket…is that reasonable?

    -I need to replace my fuel filter.

Ancestry.com 
Provides access to hundreds of genealogy databases including historical maps, the Social Security death index (containing over 59 million names), the Ancestry world tree database,  and Juliana's links (a fully searchable database containing descriptions of genealogy sites). Also offers free online magazine and columns by Ancestry.com's editorial staff, genealogical chat forums, e-mail access, and an online store.

    Why would I use this database?
    -I need to find birth information about my great-great grandfather.
    -I think my great-uncle died in 1939, but I am not sure--where can I check?

Biography Resource Center      
This is a comprehensive database of biographical information on over 340,000 people from throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas. It combines more than 435,000 biographies from over 1,000 volumes of 135+ respected Gale sources such as Contemporary Authors, Encyclopedia of World Biography, Newsmakers, Contemporary Theatre, Film, and Television, Contemporary Musicians, Historic World Leaders, Notable Twentieth-Century Scientists, Contemporary Black Biography, Religious Leaders of America, International Dictionary of Art and Artists, Writers Directory, and many more, with more than 538,000 full-text articles from nearly 300 magazines including American History, The Christian Century, Saturday Night, and U.S. News & World Report.

    Why would I use this database?
    -I need information on Babe Ruth.
    -I need to know when Walt Whitman died.
    -I need to know where Woodrow Wilson was born.

Careers Internet Database       NOTE: Use the username 416w and the password future.
Contains information on hundreds of careers from research by the Institute for Career Research plus a career test, education planner, and salary calculator.  This database is perfect for teens researching jobs and for adults looking for a career change.

    Why would I use this database?
    -Find the average salary of an architect.
    -Find careers that suit your personality.
    -Figure out what education is required to become a dental assistant.

This genealogy database includes 22,000+ family and local history books, the U.S. Federal Census from 1790-1930, PERSI Index to 6,500+ genealogy and local history periodicals, Freedman’s Bank Records, Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application files, U.S. Serial Set, and much more!

    Why would I use this database?
    -I want to know where my grandmother lived in 1920.
    -I think my ancestor served in the Revolutionary War, and I’d like to find out more about him.

Indiana Memory     
This is Indiana's digital library and is a collaboration of libraries, museums, archives, and related cultural organizations.  Search by keyword or by general topics such as architecture, agriculture, government, and daily life.  Find primary resources from Indiana history.

    Why would I use this database?
   
-I live in an historic house and would like to research photographs of it.
    -I need primary resources on Indiana's territory history.

¡Informe!        
This database provides full-text access to over 100 titles of the most popular Spanish-lanuage magazines and pamphlets.  Covers 1996-present and includes a Spanish thesaurus and interface.

    Why would I use this database?
   
-I need to find magazine articles (in Spanish) on violence in the media.
    -I need articles (in Spanish) on Latin American issues.

INSPIRE        
INSPIRE is the place to go when you need reliable, verifiable, quantifiable, and accurate information.  It offers magazines, books, encyclopedias, and other resources for all Indiana residents.  Research current events, science, business, health, notable people, hobbies, and much more from the library, school, home, or the office.  INSPIRE includes over 2 dozen databases with thousands of magazines and journals with full text plus hundreds of newspapers from around the U.S.  Materials are for all age ranges from elementary to adulthood.  Searchable databases within INSPIRE include Academics, Business, Literature, Health & Medicine, Biographies, Education, and Spanish-lanuage.  INSPIRE is funded by state tax dollars and is free to any Indiana resident.

    Why would I use this database?
   
-I need to research a medical condition.
    -I have a research paper due and need full-text articles on global warming.
    -Find out when TVs were reviewed and rated in Consumer Reports magazine?

LitFinder       
Provides access to thousands of full-text poems, short stories, and essays as well as the best known speeches of the past 2,500 years categorized into easily searchable genres.  The database also includes over 1,000 plays covering the range of dramatic expression.

    Why would I use this database?
   
-I need to find the poem has the line "Two roads diverged in a wood" in it?
    -I need to read "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost.
    -I need to read Martin Luther King, Jr.'s I Have a Dream speech.

Search this Dun & Bradstreet business directory for over 14 million public and private companies across the United States.  Company profiles and advanced search features allow you to do comprehensive market research on companies and their executives.  Up to 25 records can be downloaded/printed at a time.

-I'm looking for an IT job...what IT firms are headquartered in Indy?
    -I'd like to open a hair salon.  How many in within a 10 mile radius of Greenwood?

Morningstar Mutual Funds Online    
Access full-page reports on all 1,600 funds covered by Morningstar Mutual Funds that are updated monthly.  Users can also download semi-monthly issues (Summary and Analysis sections) approximately two weeks before they arrive in the mail.

    Why would I use this database?
   
-Find the best mutual funds this year.
    -I would like to compare the Vanguard mutual funds.

Do you ever want to find a good fiction book but don't know where to start?  The NoveList database can help you out.  It includes over 135,000 title listings, 110,000 annotations, 90,000 full-text reviews, 500 BookTalks, 350 award lists, and 250 book discussion guides.  You can search by author, title, plot elements, keywords, or series for adult, teen, and children's fiction titles.

    Why would I use this database?
   
-Find the next book to read in the Mitford series.

Search simultaneously in books, magazines, dictionaries, encyclopedias, primary sources, maps, and much more for any school topic.  

    Why would I use this database?
   
-I need current articles on capital punishment for a research paper.
    -I need to look up India in an encyclopedia.

Testing & Education Resource Center     
Create a free account to track your progress studying for AP exams, the GED, ASVAB, SAT, ACT, civil service exams, and much more!  Also, read Peterson's test prep books online, create resumes with the Online Resume Builder, and research colleges and professional programs.

-I need study for the GED.
    -I need to create a resume from scratch.

WorldCat         
This database is composed of millions of records built from the bibliographic and ownership information from contributing libraries.  Records for everything from stone tablets to electronic books, wax recordings to MP3s, DVDs and websites are incluced.  Records typically have library holdings information attached to show where they can be accessed (for libraries that are part of OCLC--Greenwood Public Library is not a member).

    Why would I use this database?
   
-I need to find out if a library in Indiana has a first edition of Freckles.
    -I'm not sure about a title for my favorite author and want to verify it.
